Day 4: Sydney and the Fortress of Louisbourg

The ship arrived in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and it was a beautiful day to venture out to the Fortress of Louisbourg. Here are a few of my photos from the day's events.

Cassie and Maggie MacDonald were our entertainment last night.  They're local (a Nova Scotia Celtic duo) and provided entertainment at breakfast, too.

The scenery was beautiful as the ms Maasdam made it way to Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The tour guide had the driver stop so we could take a photo of the Fortress of Louisbourg.

This is the barracks of the fort.  The fort was originally controlled by the French, but was captured by the British.

The city of Louisbourg has been reconstructed (think Williamsburg on a smaller scale) to represent the mid-1700s.

This soldier provided us with details on the life of a soldier.  The lecture culminated in the firing of the musket.

This is the Roman Catholic chapel inside the fort.

You'll find lighthouses all around on the islands of Nova Scotia.

The streets of Louisbourg as it looked in the mid-1700s.

The citizens of Louisbourg never paid to construct a church, but the Louisburg Cross stands on the land set aside for such a building project.

Although it was strongly fortified, the British were able to capture the fort and the surrounding territory.

It was a beautiful day... the weather was warm and sunny.

A photo looking down on the barracks from the top of the fortified walls of the fort.

The early model lawn mower was on the lawn.

The warm weather arrived late this year, according to our guide, and it was unusually warm for mid-September.

The guide passed around a picture to let us know what it's like in the area during the winter season.
