Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta is on the island of Java and is the capital of Indonesia.  The ship arrived in this very busy commercial port early this morning, and folks were waiting to see their friends and family who work for Holland America.

I took a "highlights" tour and I'm sharing a few of my photos in this busy trading center for Southeast Asia.

When I see a tag that says "made in Indonesia," I'll have a good idea from where it was shipped (click here).

One of the highlights was a visit to a museum dedicated to puppetry (Wayang Museum) which is an important art in the culture.  These are the tallest puppets and greet you as you enter.

The puppet theater occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640 under the name of the Old Dutch Church.  This is the cemetery that is in the center of the theater.

The tour guide provided a tremendous amount about the creation of shadow puppets in Asian culture.

You can rent these bikes, with matching hats, so you can find your riding partner in the busy streets of Jakarta.

This is Merdeka Palace, which is one of six presidential palaces in Indonesia.

Here's the National Monument of Indonesia (click here) which is 450 feet tall and has 77 pounds of gold as part of the flame.

This was one of many exhibits in the National History Museum celebrating the various groups making up Indonesia.  This is an object that was intended to help a family communicate with a deceased relative.
