I took the tender around 9am to spend time at the penal colony. |
When you arrive, you see the rocky coast of the island. |
There were others arriving by boat to view the islands. |
There are several paths to take, but I took the main one that takes about 45 minutes to reach the highest part of the island. |
You better watch out! |
This is the Children's Graveyard. This would be for the children of the guards who did not make it under the rough living conditions of this part of the world. |
Another view of the cemetery. There are monkeys and other creatures running around in this area. |
This is the remains of the "condemned prisoners' quarters." |
The cells were extremely small. |
This part has been restored. These are the cells for solitary confinement (if my French is correct). |
I've escaped! |
The areas for the guards and their families are still standing. The last prisoners were sent to the island in the 1940s. |
There's a hotel and restaurant for those camping out or staying overnight on the island. |
The church for the guards and their families. |
The interior of the church. |
The lighthouse was added next to the old hospital on the library. There's also a helipad for helicopters (that's where I took this photo). |
Another view of the hospital. |
It's time to make my way down to the tender for a return to the ship. The hike was a good workout. |
