Arrival - Devil's Island, French Guiana

The ship has arrived in French Guiana and the three islands that are part of the old penal colony known as Devil's Island.  From the ship, you can only see the main island (Royal) and Saint Joseph.  You must walk around the island to see Devil's Island which was for the most dangerous and the prisoners being punished with isolation.

Here are a few of my photos.  I'm putting on bug spray, and French Guiana required a yellow fever inoculation for the visit.  They've warned us about the monkeys who like to steal things from the visitors.

The advance folks from the ship have arrived on Royal Island to prep for the passengers.

Looking at the map they gave us, this must be the Governor's House which now serves as a museum.

It looks like there's a lighthouse on the other side of the island.  That's where you can see Devil's Island.

This is a view of Saint Joseph Island.

This view makes it look more like a resort than a penal colony.

You must watch out for the monkeys who steal things.  I wonder if they were sentenced to this island from the mainland.

Some of the ruins of the original prison buildings.  I will getting a close up view in a little while.
