Chilean Fjords: Amalia Glacier

The captain decided to detour to the Amalia Glacier, too.  We'll now move on to the Straits of Magellan.

The ship's passengers had a view of two glaciers in the Chilean fjords.

Another view of the Amalia Glacier and a smaller river of ice joining it in movement to the channel.

Since the 1940s, this glacier has retreated about 5 miles.  The first vegetation is moss until soil is formed for trees and plants to take root.

From Wikipedia:  “The Strait of Magellan (Spanish: Estrecho de Magallanes), also called the Straits of Magellan, is a navigable sea route separating mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. The strait is the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.”

The Prisendam is now moving south and east.  The ship will be in the Strait of Magellan this afternoon with an early arrival in Punta Arenas, Chile, tomorrow morning.
