Petropavlovsk, Kamchatsky, Russia: Home of Volcanoes and Nuclear Submarines

We arrived in Petropavlovsk (City of Peter and Paul) before sunrise.  I had breakfast, and the sun was rising as I took these photos from the ship of this Russian port.

There are over 100 active and dormant volcanoes on the Kamchatsky Peninsula.

Soviet era buildings in need of a little TLC dot the area around the port.

The hills surrounding the port.   Skiing and snowboarding are winter activities.

The sun is coming over the hillside in the city of Petropavlovsk.

There are lots of birds in the sky.  There are cormorants and sea eagles at this time of year.

Homes perched on the hillside of the port.

I think this is the Koryaksky Volcano.

This area has the largest Russian nuclear submarine base... maybe related to proximity of USA?

I have a tour of the city, the local cathedral, and a volcano museum later this morning.
