Heading to Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona

This afternoon I’ll re-board Amtrak Train 3 for the 385 mile trip from Lamy, NM, to Flagstaff, AZ.  Amtrak has a bus shuttle that will take me the 33 miles to Williams, AZ.  After arriving later in the evening, I’ll spend the night at the Grand Canyon Hotel in order to board the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon the next day.  So, it’s a day of travel for me.

The Mission Revival style depot was built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1909.

Much of the area I’ll be traveling is along US Route 66. According to Wikipedia, “US 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and the road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.”

Route 66 brings back memories of Chuck Berry and his song “Route 66,” which has the line “get your kicks on Route 66.”  Listen to the song, and I bet it becomes your earworm of the day.
