San Blas Islands, Panama

Our ship dropped anchor about noon today.  We had to take the tender to visit one of the San Blas Islands.  The islands contained natives (the Kuna) who originally did not wear clothes, and they adorned the body with drawings and tattoos.  That changed when the missionaries arrived, and the females developed a specific type of pattern of cloth (mola) by combining layers of different colors.

Here are a few of my photos from my visit on the island.

The ship arrived at the San Blas Islands a little after noon.

Homes often are destroyed with changes in sea level.

Colorful molas were for sale by the native Kuna people.

This woman was proud of her fabric work.  Note the paintings on her legs.  She also wore a nose ring.

The ms Amsterdam is off in the distance from the pier on this tiny island.

The kids were sailing out to the ship via small canoes.  The ship's crew informed us not to throw coins from the ship (which was what they wanted).

The village has very narrow streets.

The natives are Kuna.

Time to leave and take the tender back to the ship.
