Taiohae, Nuku Hiva (French Polynesia)

It was a beautiful day in Taiohae, Nuku Hiva, which is part of the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia.  The landmark valley (see the photos below) was the base camp for the reality TV show, “Survivor” in 2001.

Here are my shots from this beautiful island.

A better view of the island after sunrise.

Getting the lifeboats ready for tender service to the island.

The archaeological site was one of the first stops on the trip by 4-wheeled drive truck.

We ventured up to the top of the volcanic mountain for a vantage point of the harbor and the ms Amsterdam.

Here I am at the top of the mountain, and the harbor/bay is in the background.

Another idyllic bay overlooking the Pacific Ocean on Nuku Hiva.

You can see the black soil beaches (volcanic origin).  We were told before getting off the ship to NOT get in the water by Polynesia officials.  The area was heavily infested with sharks upon the arrival of the ship.

So long, Nuku Hiva.  The next stop will be Papeete, Tahiti, on Saturday for an overnight stay.
