A day tour of Sydney: Day 1

I had an enjoyable day touring the sites of Sydney.  I took an excursion arranged by the ship of the city, but I toured Circular Quay (pronounced "Key") on my own.  I walked over to the Opera House an took a one hour tour.

Here are both the two bluffs marking the entrance to Sydney Harbor.  It was too dark to photograph at 5:30 AM when we sailed into the harbor.

Even though it was a weekday afternoon, the folks were on the beach and surfing.

The tour allowed us to spend some time on the famous Bondi Beach.

The Opera House was part of a design competition, and the winner was announced in 1957 (the year of my birth).

It was supposed to take about 3 years and around 3 million to construct.  It took 14 years and over 100 million to build.

The "sails" are constructed of concrete and covered in over 1 million roof tiles of varying shades of cream (no white) in matte and glossy finish.  White would have made it impossible to view on a sunny day.

The construction of the roof was a difficult mathematical puzzle, but they figured it out by using strips of concrete taken from spherical shapes.

To make sure it had great acoustics, each of the five performance spaces (opera, musical, and 3 smaller spaces) are constructed of varying types of wood.

The windows in the Opera House are constructed at a 45 degree angle.  This prevents them from being black holes at night.
