Tomorrow the ship arrives in Myanmar (aka Burma)

We arrive in Myanmar tomorrow morning.  We’ll be spending almost three days in this country.  It’s been closed to the outside world for most of its years of independence.  Our Port Lecturer Barbara, who has been on many world cruises, has never been to Burma.  She’s relied on the travel folks from another HAL ship who have been to the country a few times.

The country was not open to outsiders because of the ethnic strife and one of the world’s longest running civil wars.  This changed with the elections held in 2010.  The military gave up total power and has relinquished some control to the elected government.

My tours will concentrate on the country’s largest city, Yangon (or Rangoon) and Bago.

I’m looking forward to venturing out into this part of SE Asia.
