A more knowledgeable perspective on the Amazon River Basin…

I attended two lectures today on the Amazon River Basin.  The ship continues making progress toward the entry to the Amazon, and the ship should enter the Amazon on Saturday.

The one most important lesson I learned is related to the size of the Amazon River, which begins in the Andes Mountain, is its sheer size.  The graphic below illustrates this fact below.
We’ll have a couple of opportunities to see the “meeting ofthe waters.”  Tributaries running into the Amazon flow at different rates and have different amounts of sediment.  You can see the meeting (and blending) of the two parts together.

The unusual dolphins that exist in the water are pink in color.  Amazon dolphins are mostly blind and use sonar to navigate.  Of course, it would be difficult for them to see in the muddy waters of the Amazon.
The ship has another day of travel before reaching this system of water that deposits the largest amount of freshwater into the Atlantic.

This graphic gives you some idea regarding the size of the Amazon Basin.
