What a difference a day makes? From Summer to Winter on Day 3 of Antarctic Visit

Yesterday ended a little cloudy and cold, but overnight the weather changed a great deal.  It’s even colder and snowing, and the bay where we observed nature was beginning to freeze.

Here are few shots I took this morning, and of a Norwegian ship in the bay equipped for its passengers to do some whale watching on small zodiacs.

Today's itinerary (Day 3) and the planned itinerary for tomorrow.

Ice has built up on the hull of the ship. Watch out for falling ice cycles.

A Norwegian ship (it explores the Artic region in the summer) is offloading passengers to find/view whales.

Note the ship as compared to the glacier and surrounding mountains.

I'm cold here on the observation deck.  I bet those folks are even colder on those zodiacs.

Those zodiacs get pretty close to that glacier.

It's a winter wonderland today.

The channel is in the process of freezing over as the summer season ends.

The particles grow in number and eventually form a sheet of ice.

The ship breaks up these growing ice particles as we move slowly through the channel.

A sleeping humpback whale.  The tale is to the right and the whale floats as it gets a  little shuteye.

A loan bird looking for breakfast. The cold water reflects his image.

It's snowing!

Note the guy wearing the Norwegian horned helmet in the lower zodiac.

You can see the water in transition to a frozen state.

Ship employees are enjoying the snowfall. It's not something they see often.

You can really hear the roar of glaciers calving into the sea.

It's hard to go inside to warm up.  I'm afraid I'll miss something important.

A shipboard romance:  Note that he's written "I heart U" in the snow.

The whale watching seems to be ending.  I bet they line up for hot chocolate or coffee.

If you enlarge the photo you may see the snowfall coming down today.
