Spanish to Portuguese (and one more hour ahead)...

The ship left Spanish-speaking Uruguay for a two day sail to Portuguese-speaking Brazil.  The clocks went forward an hour last night, too. The first stop in Brazil will be Rio de Janeiro.

This morning the lecture was on the very depressing history of Rio.  The city was dependent upon slave labor, and it had the largest influx of slaves with the slave trade.  The life expectancy for a slave was approximately 4-7 years once they arrived.  The working and living conditions were tragic.
The lecture followed the history of the city with its recent bankruptcy (right before the 2016 Olympics), to public corruption and jailing of governors, and the poor infrastructure (sewage flows directly into the bay areas that surround the city).

The lecturer ended with the thought, despite its history filled with sorrow, “Rio is always beautiful.”

Ship will be docked in the area of the  "smiley face."  Click to enlarge the map.
